News just in: John Ashcroft quits cabinet. This confirms my theory: Pat Robertson was right, George Bush has stopped listening to jesus. My prediction - Dick Cheney to sacrifice his daughter's girlfriend in some kind of satanic lesbian blood ritual live on fox news.

George Bush wins an election, Yasser arafat has a brain haemorrhage, John Peel and the Emir of the UAE die, the north-east votes against devolution. Shit really comes in bundles. We shouldn't be surprised about the US election though, we have to remember 60% of americans believe in the literal truth of the bible and 40% believe that the book of revelations gives an accurate prediction for future events. Plus we all know that a lot of american don't really like gays. In all seriousness being a multi-term senator can really harm your campaign because inevitably you have to make a lot of votes on many systems, sometimes in a way that appears to make you go both ways on an issue, sometimes you have to vote against funding for schools because its bundled with banning gay marriage and that can be hard to explain and sometimes you just change your mind about the issue. These are things that don't play well in 30 second soundbites, so they can be a real problem in a US election. This is why Governors can have a real advantage, If your state has done well its much harder to criticise your voting record. I don't want to bring this up but I think Howard Dean's voting record would have made it much harder for the republicans to paint him as a flip-flopping tax and spend uber-liberal than john kerry's. But there, I've said it.Moving on, though, people keep asking me what I think about Hilary in 2008, I think people are making far more of her than is justified. There's 4 years to go and already she's the bookies 5/1 favourite to win the whole damn election. Two things are important here: 1) there are lots of good candidates for 2008 on both sides: Giuliani, Schwarzenegger, Powell, Rice for the republicans, Richardson, Edwards, Clinton, Dean, Obama (and yes Kerry) for the Democrats. It's way to early to call the primaries let alone the election. Plus, four years is an eternity in politics, many new candidates will come and go before primary season. What really is depressing though, it that this election has so much much more influence on our lives than the general election will do next year, Blair will win, nothing will change but even if it did, the US president still shapes our lives in as many ways as the P.M. does and we get no say in his election. I've got to say if we were the 51st state kerry would be president by a long way right now.On Arafat, I feel really bad because I think I want him to die. Which you shouldn't really wish on anyone (except perhaps Dick Cheney and Ariel Sharon), but I do feel his death will open the way for a new leadership which can begin real peace negotiations. I'm always trying to begin living in hope.On dead celebrities my theory of them being gregarious like buses seems to be coming true: John Peel, Emlyn Hughes, Chris Reeve,Howard Keel all recently dead. My theory is that we're working our way up to Yasser Arafat, Fidel Castro and the Pope.Final good news, though: Deal may have been struck on Darfur-http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/3996859.stm
